Back to the Motherland

Monday October 31, 2005

Tomorrow I leave for China for yet another FOB Bus Tour. Normally I hate going on the FOB bus tours, but when it’s in China it’s technically no longer a “FOB” Bus Tour, and it’s friggin’ China so it’s gonna be lotsa fun.

I would write out a list of where I’m going and when, but I actually don’t know all the spots and the names would be meaningless to 99% of the people reading this. I just know that it’s more of the southern area of China we’re visiting this time, and at the end of the tour we’ll be staying in Guangzhou for a few days on our own, mostly to shop and enjoy some of the city at our own pace.

However — just like last year, I’m signed up once again for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), with the set goal to write a 50,000 word novel in the month of November. Last year I accomplished a startling 50 words before giving up.

I’m going to see how this two-week trip hurts helps with the writing. I might not be aiming for an entire novel, more like just making sure I write as much as I can, so hopefully some good blog entries to post up will come of it.

Road Rage Techniques

Tuesday October 18, 2005

I derive pleasure in my daily commute from exacting revenge on slow drivers. Particularly the ones that hold up traffic and show no regard at all as to what they’re doing by slowing down traffic.

Since my favored technique of crossing the dotted line into their lane has no real indication as to whether it’s bothering the slow driver or not, I’ve taken up a new tactic: driving even slower than they are driving.

About a Boy, Shopgirl, Bluebeard

Sunday October 16, 2005

My write-up about these three books is long overdue since I read them months ago, but this post is purely for history so I can remember that I did in fact actually read them. These aren’t even gonna be reviews since I’m too lazy to go into their plots, so you’ll just get a lotta mumbling from me.

About a Boy I read because everyone kept telling me to watch the movie and so I read the book so I could then see the movie (which I haven’t yet). Shopgirl I read because the movie was coming out and it looked good, and also cause I got it on sale for a great price in Iowa. Bluebeard was read on Ken’s recommendation.

MySpace

Thursday October 13, 2005

MySpace

Holy crap, I’ve succumbed to pressure and made a MySpace profile. A pretty sweet one too, if I do say so myself. One of my projects at work actually had me partaking in some “viral marketing” and creating MySpace profiles for some characters from a website we had made, and thus led to my “hacking” of their profiles to create something relatively design-y.

So add me as a friend if you’d like, and if anyone is interested in the stylesheet, just drop me a line and I’ll send it over.

Next step: add annoying music video that plays on load.

Halloween

Tuesday October 11, 2005

Yoda Jack-O-Lantern Pumpkin

Halloween’s coming up again, which means it’s time for all the girls who proclaim themselves not to be slutty to dress up like the sluts they are and slut around town. Please, we all know why you dress up in those “costumes,” stop pretending.

It’s time for candy corn again. Does anyone else eat them in layers sometimes? Like nibbling the white tip first, and then the orange layer, and then finishing off the yellow? Yeah, probably just me.

If I get bored enough (Or motivated enough? Guess they’re kind of the same thing sometimes), it’d be really fun to get a pumpkin and try to carve one of those crazy ones that look like real photos.

South Asia Earthquake

South Asia Quake

The death toll is now up to 20,000 on this magnitude-7.6 earthquake that hit Kashmir on October 8.

I believe The Onion says it best in a situation like this.

Network for Good has a page set up with links to ways to help out. I’ll probably hold up until some more organized stuff starts showing up.

Serenity

Serenity

Update: First nine minutes of serenity viewable at Vivadas.

I’ve been holding off on my review of Serenity so I could gather my thoughts and give a more thought-out review, as opposed to my usual first impressions.

Serenity is best described as a “western in space,” created by Joss Whedon, the mind behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. While most would list it as “science fiction”, the world has nothing in the way or lasers, teleporters, or robots, but instead has people carrying revolvers and rifles, and wearing leather and trenchcoats.

Bottom line first: Serenity was really good. I’m still deciding on whether or not it beats out Batman Begins as my favorite film this summer, but the two of them come really close.

Gap Inc. is AJAX-licious

Monday October 3, 2005

Gap.com

This is about a month late, but I didn’t have a need to visit gap.com until last week, only to find that their site had been completely overhauled.

No more tables. They’ve gone CSS and XHTML (Strict none the less) friendly, and little bits of AJAX are sprinkled about to make things very user-friendly. There isn’t anything all that groundbreaking about what they’re using; what’s worth getting excited over is the fact that a big company is willing to take the risk and use some very new and innovative technology which is very much going against the norm of most big sites on the web.

Check out the “Quicklook” feature in the product listings, and the way that size and color availability is shown with a quick hover. Job well done.

A couple of more in-depth reviews of the site at Speak Up > To Shop or Not To Shop and every breath death defying: Gap.com’s new, innovative QuickLook widgets
