2005 Year-End: Music

Time to do some year-end lists. I’m gonna start off with music this time, and by using the magic of iTunes it pretty much makes these lists for me. These lists are for music I found in the year 2005, not music that was released in 2005.

Update: Favorite song chosen below. Right, these are all just stats gathered by a computer program, so scroll down to see my pick for favorite song of the year.

Most Played Songs

Pretty self-explanatory. Unfortunately it tends to favor songs I found earlier in the year.

Death Cab for Cutie

  1. Death Cab for Cutie - Brothers on a Hotel Bed (88 plays)
My favorite track on my first listen through their album Plans, although I think What Sarah Said is just as good, if not a better track.

  2. Howie Day - Collide (63 plays)
    Very radio-friendly and Top 40, but can’t deny it’s a great song.

  3. Elefant - Tonight Let’s Dance (61 plays)
Love the beat on this track.

  4. Stereophonics - Dakota (55 plays)
Probably a lot higher than it should be, but it did come out early in the year, helping it get more plays.

  5. Jem - Finally Woken (54 plays)
I always bob my head when I hear this song.

Kelly Clarkson

Honorable Mention: Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone; New Order - Age of Consent; Badly Drawn Boy - The Shining; Ben Folds - In Between Days; French Kicks - The Trial of the Century; DeVotchKa - How It Ends; Rilo Kiley - Patiently; The Human League - Human.

Top Rated Songs

Songs I’ve rated with five stars.

  1. Death Cab for Cutie - Movie Script Ending (Acoustic)
  2. Jimmy Eat World - The World You Love

  4. Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - The Angels’ Share
  5. Howie Day - Collide
  6. Jem - Finally Woken
  7. Death Cab for Cutie - What Sarah Said

  9. Rilo Kiley - Pull Me in Tighter

Top 10 Most Played

This one goes back to when I first started using iTunes and will be updated each year.

  1. Velvet Teen - Counting Backwards (143 plays)
  2. The Postal Service - Such Great Heights (114 plays)
  3. The Weakerthans - Plea From A Cat Named Virtue (112 plays)

  7. The Postal Service - We Will Become Silhouettes (93 plays)
  8. Death Cab for Cutie - Brothers on a Hotel Bed (88 plays)
  9. The Weakerthans - Time’s Arrow (78 plays)
  10. (tie) Death Cab for Cutie - Coney Island (75 plays)
  11. (tie) Death Cab for Cutie - Title and Registration (75 plays)
  12. (tie) Phantom Planet - Do the Panic (Live) (75 plays)

Favorite Song

Death Cab for Cutie - What Sarah Said

Oooh! What an upset! What Sarah Said narrowly edges out Brothers. It doesn’t get any more emo than talking about a friend on her death bed in the hospital and pacing in a waiting room that only brings bad news. “Love is watching someone die? So who’s gonna watch you die?” So sappy, yet so good.

An observation: From the first line of the song saying that “every plan is a tiny prayer to father time,” would it be safe to say then that the name of the album is really “Tiny Prayers to Father Time” ?

Favorite Album

Death Cab for Cutie - Plans

Death Cab for Cutie - Plans
Ooh, big surprise here. I didn’t listen to a lot of albums this year as it is, but still, this album was awesome.

Dullest Album: Coldplay - X & Y

kill youth with easy listening.

kelly clarkson? i think that’s fallen below the “real music” line. i’ve always disliked this whole do a cover and get famous deal. its not just the ability, but the art… but we tend to miss that. real artists overrun by a bunch of singing robots.

and the coldplay record WAS dull, wasn’t it?

Seems like some good picks. I personally like “Different Names For The Same Thing” best off of Plans. Also, how did you just discover “Shining” this year? Good pick though.

Still, throw down the guantlet and pick some favorite song instead of letting the numbers do it for you.

Also, where is The Office post? I know you want to make one.

lucifer: You seriously need to listen to the song. It’s ridiculously addicting and catchy. I hated Kelly Clarkson but “Since U Been Gone” is a total guilty pleasure. And what are you talking about “covers” ? It’s a cover?

Brad: Dunno about “Shining”. I’ve got you down as the one recommending it, and I didn’t get it until January 24th.

Favorite song has been chosen.

And I’ll talk about The Office soon enough.
