POV Writing Exercise

Write a story in which a store is robbed. The cast: The robber, the store employee, a shopper. Start with the robber in first person, move to the store employee in second person, and finish off with the shopper in third person. Tell the robbery from their POVs.

I sit in my car parked across the street from the bank. My eyes dart back and forth from the clock on the dash and the entrance to the bank. 8:56, it says. Anytime now.

The small bank sits isolated from any other businesses, and when I scoped it out earlier the place seemed very lightly staffed.

At 9:00 on the dot I see the last customer leave, as well as the teller and the security guard. The overweight guard and the teller stand around and talk as the guard locks up, and I see I must make my move now.

I get out of my car and sprint across the street, pulling my gun out of my pocket as I do. The guard hears me as I approach from behind, and just begins to turn his head.

***

You were talking with John the security guard about the impending doom of peak oil when you see a dark figure approaching. John turns just as the figure raises his hand up and strikes John in the back of the neck.

“Holy Shit!” you say as you flinch and bring your arms up to protect yourself.

***

Jan gets back to her car and realizes she left her purse at the bank. She walks back and sees two figures arguing in front.

“What do you want?” one of them says.

“Money,” the other replies.

Jan realizes this is a bank robbery and reaches for her missing purse to dial 911 with her missing phone. She begins walking backwards but is quickly noticed.
