Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk

Tuesday August 3, 2004

Finished reading “Fight Club” by Chuck Palahniuk, of which the movie was based on. I haven’t seen the movie in quite a while, but from what I remembered it seems like a fairly faithful translation, aside from the ending. I read that Chuck actually preferred the ending to the movie, a feeling that I share with him because the ending in the book seems to leave a lot of questions open.

The book itself is one great big anarchy/socialist idea. Palahniuk’s anti-consumerism is prominent throughout the novel. I really don’t feel like doing a full-on review of this book since most people have seen the movie, but almost everything is there. He has a nice sense of humor about things, despite the somewhat dark subject matter that some people may not agree with. Some good quotes from the book now.

One minute was enough, Tyler said, a person had to work hard for it, but a minute of perfection was worth the effort. A minute was the most you could ever expect from perfection.

We are the middle children of history, raised by television to believe that someday we’ll be millionaires and movie stars and rock stars, but we won’t. And we’re just learning this fact,” Tyler said. “So don’t fuck with us.”
