Who Needs Titles

A couple of fun things I wanted to discuss.

Google launched Google Voice Local Search. I gave it a test run just to see how well it works, and the voice recognition is pretty sweet. I haven’t tested it extensively to see if it can narrow down a coffee shop in a zip code or anything like that, since so far it only asks for city and state. It’s got potential, though.

Farecast is a cool new airfare site that will tell you when to buy tickets. Technically they’re not really new, but I believe when they launched they only supported a few airports, and now it’s over 75. I haven’t had to fly anywhere myself, but it seems like a good site to keep around.

Apple announced their Mac Pro computer now comes with two four-core processors, making it an eight core machine. I affectionately refer to it as “The Ocho.”

I’ve begun season three of BSG, and it is awesome. Unfortunately, since the season’s already over, I’m aware of two spoilers that happen during this season and I’m kinda sad/angry. Now I just want to hurry through this season and get it over with before I’m spoiled any more.

  • Google Voice Local Search. I’ve yet to try it, but it’s just awesome having “google” as one of my contacts on my phone.

Online Etiquette

Monday June 26, 2006

I joined the Quinn server for some exciting multiplayer Tetris action. Two of the players were still going at it, but I clicked the “play” button anyway in the hopes that I could just jump in, but alas, it was an “everyone starts at the same time” deal.

I fiddled with some of the options as I waited, and then heard the chime announcing the new game was about to begin. Eager as I was, I clicked the “play” button, but as I did the “play” changed to “abort”, and before I even got to drop my first piece, I was out of the game. Who knew it would automatically start the game for me?

I opened the chat for the server and did my whining.

“Man, I accidentally hit abort =(”

Someone responded and asked everyone else to abort their games as well because it wasn’t fair, and to my surprise, they all aborted and restarted the game so I could play! Courtesy and respect are two things I never expected from an online gaming community.

This was a far departure from my usual games of Warcraft 3 with 12-year-olds, who insult other players with names like “gay” and “noob” when they lag the game and bring everything to a halt.

The age difference between people who play Warcraft and Tetris accounts for the perceived immaturity, and yet if all the 12-year-old Warcraft players grew up to become like the Tetris players I played with last night, then there may be hope in a civilized future after all.

Thread- who?

Sheltered from Oddica

I first learned of Oddica when I saw the link on Dan Cederholm’s site. At first Oddica looked like all the other (nearly) indistinguishable t-shirt sites on the web such as Threadless and Busted Tees, but Oddica is focused a lot more on the artists than the consumers.

  • Thanks. No. So, if I send this link to all of my friends, does that mean they’ll send it back to me?

CSS IE LImport Bug

Monday May 8, 2006

With Internet Explorer 7 approaching release and all the web development that goes on these days, I would have thought that every CSS IE bug would have been documented by now. Yet I seem to have discovered a new one, although with my eccentric file organizing techniques I can see why nobody else had run across it yet.

  • Pretty Ugly. A good design vs ugly design debate has been going on lately, but I think Jason nails it on the head.

No Way!

Wednesday April 19, 2006

Holy crap! Jorge just told me that he saw my site on CSS Beauty, and sure enough it looks like I’m one of their featured sites. I’m a bit puzzled since I submitted my site almost two months ago, but regardless, welcome to everyone visiting for the first time.

CSS Beauty

It’s a bit humbling though, and kinda funny when I think everyone’s gonna come and see me trying to pick a fight with Shaun Inman and making fun of Jorge’s PDF Portfolio. Talk about getting caught off guard.

Btw, I noticed my site “usurped” vitamin on CSS Beauty’s featured sites list, which has Shaun Inman listed on the Advisory Board. That’s Eric Lim: 2; Shaun Inman: 0. ;-)

Looking for a Front-End Developer

As an addendum, and something I’ve been meaning to talk about anyway, I served as Juxt Interactive’s HTML/CSS dude for a year, and just recently left to join Go Farm in Pasadena. As such, Juxt is looking for someone to fill my spot as a Front-End Developer. If anyone’s interested (particularly visitors from CSS Beauty), they’re looking to hire.

About a month ago I finally got around to playing with sIFR for a project I was working on. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, sIFR is a method of rendering text with Flash through the use of javascript, jointly developed by Shaun Inman (the “i” in sIFR) and Mike Davidson. It is essentially a workaround for the limitation of fonts that can be used on the web without having to create images for everything.

The tutorials were all fairly easy to follow and I ran into only minor problems on getting everything setup. But when it came time to getting the fonts to size correctly, sIFR was not going my way. IE seemed to be dealing with it okay, but Firefox wasn’t complying.
